OPINION: Pure Robbery in African Boxing: Investigation Needed to Preserve Integrity

This is pure robbery and it should be investigated before the Ghana Boxing Authority brings African boxing into disrepute.

About two months ago, Ibadan-based boxer Rasheed Idowu, popularly known as “ID Buster,” destroyed his Ghanaian counterpart Bastie Samie in a UBO African Light Heavyweight challenge. After dominating the fight for two rounds and sending Bastie Samie to the canvas twice, “ID Buster” celebrated his victory while medics anxiously attended to Samie.

The Punch Online later revealed that the Ghana Boxing Authority decided to send the UBO Belt to the true champion, Rasheed Idowu, probably because their plan to cheat the Nigerian boxer backfired. The belt was reported to have been delivered to Nigeria on April 17, 2024, four days after the controversial bout, and was presented to the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control(NBBofC) chairman in Lagos State.
