PHOTOS: Celebrating Olympic Day with the Osun State Sports Ministry

The Osun State Sports Ministry joins sports lovers, enthusiasts, and Olympians worldwide in celebrating Olympic Day. To mark this significant occasion, the Osun Sports Ministry organized a series of events including a road walk, a Taekwondo demonstration, and a sensitization session at the Osun State Government House. These activities aimed to promote peace and unity across the state and the world at large.

Olympic Day is a global celebration commemorating the founding of the International Olympic Committee and the modern Olympic Movement by Pierre de Coubertin in 1894. The events in Osogbo began with a road walk from Old Garage Osogbo to the Osun State Government House in Oke Fia, Osogbo.

The contingents from the sports ministry were received at the Osun State Government House by Mr. Olaniyi A.A, SA to the Governor on Protocol, and Hon. Abiola Awoyeye, Chairman of the Osun State House of Assembly Committee on Youth, Sports, and Special Needs.

Governor Ademola Adeleke, represented by Hon. Abiola Awoyeye, emphasized the significance of this year’s Olympic Day celebration as it coincides with the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The Governor highlighted the core purpose of the International Olympic Committee: fostering unity among nations in peace and solidarity, building bridges, inspiring us, keeping us healthy, and bringing out the best in us.

Also present at the Olympic Day Celebration is Adenike Olawuyi, Osun-Groomed Basketball player and a member of the Nigeria Women’s Basketball team.

Governor Adeleke encouraged everyone to celebrate the joy that sports bring and looked forward to an unforgettable Olympic Games. He also recognized Hon. Tunde Popoola, Secretary General of the Nigerian Olympic Committee, praising him as a good ambassador of Osun State and expressed a desire to leverage his experience to advance sports in the state.
