In a vibrant celebration of global sporting spirit, Osun State joined over 500 countries to mark the 2025 Olympic Day Run, with participants embarking on a symbolic fitness walk across the state capital, Osogbo. The event, which promotes unity, physical activity, and healthy living, witnessed a strong turnout led by prominent sports administrators and government representatives.
The Osun State contingent was led by the Secretary-General of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Chief Tunde Popoola, alongside the host General Manager, Mr. Rotimi Dunmoye; Director of Sports in the Ministry, Mr. Layi Adesiyan; Director of Coaching and Training, Mr. Demola Daini; and Director of Organization, Mrs. Ronke Ogunbanwo.
The walk commenced at the Osogbo Township Stadium and proceeded through Ayetoro and Igbona to Rano Roundabout along the Ring Road, before returning to the stadium. There, the participants were received by the Chairman of the Osun State House Committee on Sports, Hon. Abiola Jeremiah Awoyeye, who represented Governor Senator Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke and his deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi, who also serves as the Commissioner for Sports.
In his address at the event, Chief Tunde Popoola echoed the message of International Olympic Committee (IOC) President, Thomas Bach, highlighting the power of sport to unite people and promote well-being.
“On Olympic Day, we celebrate the Olympic Movement’s mission to make the world a better place through sport,” Chief Popoola quoted. “When we do sport, it inspires us to always give it our best, it spreads joy, and it brings us together. Sport and physical activity are low-cost, high-impact tools for healthy minds, healthy bodies, and resilient communities.”
Speaking further, Chief Popoola emphasized the importance of grassroots sports development, noting that Osun State is showing strong promise in sporting excellence.
“I work in the spirit of our own local view, to get down to the root of sports locally. I’m happy to say that our sports is booming in Osun State. I’m also happy to say that Osun is ready for sport,” he said proudly.
A native of the state, Chief Popoola expressed delight at the ongoing refurbishment of the Osogbo Township Stadium and praised the active participation of local athletes.
“From the database we have, there are many athletes from Osun who currently represent other states. That shows the potential here. We must continue to build on this momentum.”
He also extended heartfelt appreciation to Governor Adeleke and Deputy Governor Adewusi for their unwavering support for sports development in the state.
The Olympic Day celebration in Osun not only reinforced the state’s commitment to the values of the Olympic Movement but also underscored the growing importance of sports in building healthier communities.
