The match, held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu, saw the home side maintain their dominance in the NPFL 2024/2025 season, thanks to a well-placed header from skipper Chinemerem Ugwueze. The win lifts Rangers to 3rd on the NPFL standings with 27 points from 16 matches.

Rangers’ Chief Coach, Ekeh Ekenedilichukwu, made key adjustments to the lineup, handing starts to Agu Kenechukwu, Ikenna Stephen, and Hillary Ekawu in the absence of the Super Eagles B team invitees. Despite these changes, Rangers kept faith with the core of the squad that secured a crucial midweek draw in Aba, and the team did not disappoint.

Rivers United, coached by Finidi George, came out strong from the opening whistle and controlled possession in the early stages. However, they faced stiff resistance from the home side’s defense, led by Austin Opara, Kenneth Igboke, Effimi Nsi, and Ikenna Stephen, who thwarted every attacking effort.

Rangers could have doubled their lead in the 35th minute when Godwin Obaje set up Ekawu, but the midfielder’s left-footed shot narrowly missed the target, much to the frustration of the home bench.

In the second half, Finidi George made three substitutions in an attempt to turn the tide. His tactical changes put Rangers under pressure, but despite having a larger share of possession, Rivers United’s attack failed to breach the resolute defense of Rangers. It was Rivers’ goalkeeper who found himself busier, making several crucial saves to deny Frank Uwumiro, Obaje, and substitute Daniel Onyia from extending the home side’s lead.

With the 1-0 victory, Rangers extend their unbeaten streak to nine matches and remain firmly in contention for the title. The team now sits in 3rd place with 27 points, just behind the league leaders.

Next, Rangers will travel to Katsina to face Katsina United on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at the Muhammad Dikko Stadium, aiming to continue their impressive form.

Rangers’ resolute defense, combined with clinical finishing from Ugwueze, ensured they maintained their strong position at the top of the NPFL standings. The Flying Antelopes will be hoping to extend their unbeaten run and challenge for another title this season.
