Enyimba FC delivered a scintillating performance in their match day 3 of the CAF Confederation Cup group stage, dominating Mozambique’s Associação Black Bulls FC with a resounding 4-1 victory at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo. The win marked the Aba giants’ first triumph in the group stage this season and reinvigorated their campaign.
From the outset, Enyimba displayed their attacking intent. Joseph Atule opened the scoring early, capitalizing on a high press, only for the visitors to level the match with a swift counter-attack. Undeterred, Enyimba pressed on, regaining the lead through Ifeanyi Ihemekwele just before halftime.
The second half saw Enyimba squander several chances until the introduction of veteran striker Brown Ideye. Making an impactful debut, Ideye scored a brilliant goal, rounding the goalkeeper and finishing from a tight angle. Atule sealed the victory with his second goal, set up by substitute Kalu Nweke.
Stanley Eguma, newly appointed head coach, described the victory as a morale booster and a gift to Nigerian football fans. “This result is like a New Year gift to Nigerians because Nigerians have been yearning for this kind of result in the continent,” Eguma stated in his post-match press conference.
Eguma admitted facing challenges upon his arrival but emphasized the importance of instilling a winning mentality. “I wasn’t comfortable with what I met on ground, but we had to work with the available players and adjust,” he noted.
Eguma praised Brown Ideye’s influence despite his recent return to action. “His presence is a big plus. He may not be fully fit, but it’s a gradual process. He will add more to the team in the future,” Eguma commented.
Despite the absence of key players like Daniel Daga, who is set for a move to Europe, Eguma highlighted the team’s adaptability. The coach improvised by deploying center-back Innocent Gabriel in a holding midfield role, a decision that paid off.
Enyimba’s victory lifts them back into contention in Group D. They are set to face Nasarawa United in a rescheduled NPFL match in Aba, followed by a crucial home fixture against Egypt’s Al Masry in the CAF Confederation Cup.
