Enyimba International FC secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Nasarawa United earlier today at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba in a rescheduled Match Day 17 fixture of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
Coach Stanley Eguma made just one change to the lineup that triumphed over Mozambique’s Black Bulls in the CAF Confederation Cup over the weekend, with Kalu Nweke replacing Fatai Abdullahi. Meanwhile, former Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye started on the bench, as he did in their continental clash.
The game got off to a competitive start, but it was Enyimba’s in-form winger Joseph Atule who broke the deadlock deep into first-half stoppage time (45+4 minutes). The 24-year-old capitalized on an excellent assist from Ifeanyi Ihemekwele to give the home side a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Nasarawa United found their way back into the match in the 58th minute after a defensive mix-up from Enyimba allowed Anas Yusuf to level the score. Yusuf’s goal marked his 11th of the season, showcasing his prolific form for the Solid Miners.
However, the joy for the visitors was short-lived. Just two minutes later, Brown Ideye, who came on as a substitute, made an instant impact. A brilliant run and cross from Joseph Atule set up the experienced striker to restore Enyimba’s lead in the 60th minute. The goal secured Ideye’s spot as a pivotal addition to the squad, with the short-term signing already delivering results.
Enyimba held on to their lead, claiming their first NPFL victory in six matches and their second win in as many games under their new coach. The win lifts the People’s Elephant to 7th on the NPFL log, with two outstanding fixtures offering a chance to climb further.
Joseph Atule’s form remains a bright spot for Enyimba. The Benue-born winger has now scored three goals and provided one assist in just two games under the new coach, underlining his importance in Enyimba’s resurgence.
For Nasarawa United, the defeat leaves them searching for consistency, despite Yusuf’s impressive tally this season.
