Osun-born Olatunji Baruwa MON, the Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer, is reportedly set to be honored by the Governor of Nasarawa State, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the team’s success at the just-concluded Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2024).
Despite being from Osun State, Baruwa works in Nasarawa State as the goalkeeper trainer for the state-owned football club, Nasarawa United Football Club.
Baruwa played a crucial role in the Super Eagles’ journey to the final of the competition, where they narrowly lost 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast. His expertise and dedication as the team’s goalkeeper trainer were instrumental in their impressive performance throughout the tournament.
Reports indicate that Baruwa’s invitation to receive this honor is a testament to his remarkable achievement in representing Nasarawa State with pride as the goalkeeper trainer of Nasarawa United FC.
This above recognition and proposed honor is in addition to the rewards given to Baruwa and the rest of the Super Eagles squad by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for finishing as runners-up at the AFCON in Ivory Coast.
Upon their return to Nigeria, President Tinubu awarded the players and coaches with the honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON).
He also gave each player a flat and a plot of land in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for their silver-winning heroics at the AFCON.
