Osun United Edge Calabar Rovers FC to Secure Vital Home Win

Osun United secured an important 2-1 victory over Rovers FC in a fiercely contested Nigeria National League (NNL) encounter at the Ile-Ogbo Township Stadium on Saturday.

The home side started the game with a cautious approach, gradually growing into the contest before breaking the deadlock in the 15th minute. A determined run from Gberefun on the right channel saw him win possession and deliver a precise pass to Emmanuel Essien, who made no mistake in slotting home the opener.

Rovers FC nearly responded immediately when a well-taken free kick struck the woodwork in the 17th minute, serving as a warning to the Omoluabi Giants. However, Osun United continued to press for an extension to their lead, with Gberefun and Gafar Olafimihan posing a constant threat to the visitors’ defense.

Shortly before halftime, Osun United doubled their advantage in added time. Gberefun once again played a crucial role, setting up substitute Robiu Olateju, who managed to beat the offside trap before cutting the ball back for Olafimihan to finish from close range.

The second half saw Osun United maintain their attacking intent, with Naheem Odugbemi and Gberefun coming close to extending the lead. However, Rovers FC remained resilient and continued to push forward in search of a goal.

Osun United made a series of substitutions to freshen things up, bringing in Mojeed, Aremu, and Olalere for Essien, Olafimihan, and Chinedu. Despite the changes, Rovers FC found a breakthrough late in added time after a defensive lapse allowed them to pull one back, making for a nervy finish.

With the win, Osun United now have 16 points from eight matches, trailing group leaders Kun Khalifa by three points. The Omoluabi Giants will look to continue their strong form as they face a crucial away fixture against Sporting Lagos next weekend in Onikan, Lagos.
