The management teams of Akwa United Football Club and Dakkada FC, alongside those of Ibom Angels and Ibom Youth Football Clubs, have been dissolved with immediate effect by the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey.
The announcement came on the heels of the conclusion of the 2024/25 Nigeria Football League season, during a crucial meeting held in Uyo between the Commissioner and representatives of the four state-funded clubs.
Elder Bassey directed that the chairmen and secretaries of all affected clubs submit their handover notes to the Ministry of Sports within two weeks. He explained that the move is part of a broader strategy to reposition sports in the state in line with Governor Umo Eno’s Arise Agenda.
“This decision is necessary to set the foundation for a new direction in our football development. We are grateful for the services rendered by the outgoing officials and wish them the very best,” Bassey stated.
He added that new management structures will soon be constituted to oversee preparations ahead of the upcoming football season.
The dissolution follows what stakeholders described as an underwhelming football year for the state-owned teams. The Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Football Association, Mr. Samuel Umoh, noted that the just concluded season was not favourable for the clubs and expressed support for the Commissioner’s decision.
In separate remarks, Elder Omon Bassey (Akwa United), Coach Aniedi Dickson (Dakkada FC), Coach Edwin Okon (Ibom Angels), and Coach Lawrence Iquaibom (Ibom Youth) appreciated the opportunity to serve and pledged continued commitment to the growth of football and sports in the state.
The affected clubs, particularly Akwa United and Dakkada FC, have seen fluctuating fortunes in recent seasons, making this restructuring a significant step toward potential rejuvenation in the 2025/26 campaign.
