Rivers Angels FC head coach, Tosan Blankson, has been named the Best Coach of the NWFL Premiership Campaign for the First Round by the Naija Women’s Football Awards. The recognition came after a dominant first stanza performance, where Rivers Angels secured five wins and two draws in seven matches. Blankson received an impressive 1,632 votes to clinch the award.
Reacting to the recognition, Coach Blankson expressed his gratitude, dedicating the award to his team.
“I’m completely overwhelmed and humbled by this nomination. I want to thank my team—the players and the staff—for their tireless efforts and dedication. This award is not just a testament to my work; it reflects the hard work and commitment of everyone involved. I’m proud of the way we have started the season, and this award is a great motivation to keep pushing ourselves to do better. We will continue to work hard, stay focused, and strive for excellence in every game. I also want to thank the organizers and voters of this prestigious award. Coach Blankson also shed light on his move to Rivers Angels after leaving Delta Queens at the end of the 2023/2024 season. He clarified that his decision was not influenced by any external factors but rather by the need for a fresh challenge.
“After the 2023/2024 season, I was open to staying at Delta Queens, but there was nobody on the ground to negotiate contract terms with me because the Delta State Sports Commission chairman position was vacant. Instead of waiting endlessly, I decided to seek greener pastures and embrace a serious challenge. At that moment, Rivers Angels came to mind—don’t forget, they are serial winners.”
Setting his sights on greater achievements, Blankson made it clear that merely qualifying for the Super 6 was not his ultimate target.
“My target for Rivers Angels in the first season is to build a team that will compete both domestically and internationally. Qualifying for the Super 6 is not the goal for me—this club is already used to it; it’s like a tradition for them.”
When asked about the possibility of winning the Super 6, he emphasized that Rivers Angels are genuine contenders.
“From the onset, Rivers Angels are not pretenders but contenders in the Nigeria Women Football League. So, first, let’s qualify for the Super 6, and from there, anything is possible.”
Despite praising the league organizers, Blankson urged them to be more proactive in their responsibilities.
“The organizers are doing their best, but they should be more proactive in discharging their responsibilities because perfection is of the Lord only.”
Currently, Rivers Angels lead the NWFL Group B standings with an impressive +12 goal difference, further solidifying their status as one of the top teams in the league.
